Circus Days
In 1971, drawn by a lifelong fascination with nomadic life and the big top, Jill Freedman left New York City to travel with the Beatty-Cole Circus for two full seasons. Living out of trailers and sharing in the grueling daily rhythm of raising and tearing down canvas tents, she fully embedded herself in the itinerant community of performers, roustabouts, and animal trainers.
Published in 1975, Circus Days captures an insider’s portrait of a vanishing American subculture. Looking beyond the ringlights and spectacle, Freedman’s photographs reveal the unglamorous reality behind the magic—recording the quiet camaraderie, intense discipline, and deep humanity of a close-knit traveling family.
